We are happy to help coordinate care after urgent needs have been addressed.

SERVICES OFFERED

  • Care at Beacon Behavioral Health is provided by a small, experienced clinical team. Psychiatric services are supervised by a board‑certified psychiatrist, with care provided by John Keener, PMHNP, a psychiatric‑mental health nurse practitioner with extensive experience working with adults across a wide range of psychiatric conditions.


    John Keener works closely within the Beacon clinical model, emphasizing careful assessment, longitudinal understanding of patients, and close collaboration with families, therapists, and schools when appropriate.

  • Beacon Behavioral Health provides:

    • Psychiatric diagnostic evaluations

    • Medication management

    • Ongoing psychiatric care

    • Consultation and collaboration with therapists, schools, and other providers

    • Care for both routine and complex psychiatric presentations

  • Beacon’s primary focus is psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Many patients also work with outside therapists. We actively collaborate with therapists and other providers to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.

  • Yes. Beacon provides care for children, adolescents, and adults. We have extensive experience working with youth who have complex emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental needs, including close collaboration with families and schools.

APPOINTMENTS & EVALUATIONS

  • Initial evaluations are comprehensive and may be longer than typical psychiatric visits. They include a detailed clinical history, diagnostic formulation, and discussion of treatment options. Depending on clinical needs, evaluations may be conducted by the psychiatrist or by John Keener, PMHNP, within Beacon’s collaborative care model.
    When appropriate, collateral information from family members, schools, therapists, or other medical providers may be requested.

  • Follow-up visits vary depending on clinical needs and provider type but are designed to allow adequate time for thoughtful medication management and discussion of symptoms, functioning, and treatment goals.

  • Yes. Secure telehealth appointments are available when clinically appropriate and permitted by licensing and regulatory requirements.

COLLABORATION & CARE COORDINATION

  • Absolutely. Collaboration is a core value of Beacon Behavioral Health. With appropriate consent, we regularly communicate with therapists, primary care physicians, neurologists, schools, and other professionals involved in a patient’s care.

  • Yes. Beacon frequently consults with schools, therapeutic programs, and other organizations to support students or patients with complex psychiatric or behavioral needs.

MEDICATIONS & TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY

  • Medication decisions are made carefully and collaboratively, using the best available evidence while accounting for each patient’s unique history, sensitivities, and goals. Both the psychiatrist and John Keener, PMHNP, emphasize diagnostic clarity, conservative and thoughtful prescribing when possible, and regular reassessment over time.

  • No. Treatment decisions are collaborative. Medications are discussed transparently, including potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.

INSURANCE & FEES

  • We understand that insurance and billing can feel stressful, and we aim to be as transparent and supportive as possible. Beacon Behavioral Health includes both in-network and out-of-network services, depending on the provider.


    John Keener, PMHNP is currently in-network with:

    • Anthem

    • Aetna

    • Optum

    • Sentara

    • Credentialing with Cigna is in progress.


    Some patients may choose to see John Keener on an out-of-network or self-pay basis. In those cases, the fees are:

    • $100 for a 30-minute visit

    • $200 for a 60-minute visit
